Guar gum is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though it commonly causes gastrointestinal side effects — abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, flatulence, heartburn, and gas. These effects can be reduced by starting with a small dose and increasing it gradually.

The biggest safety concern is choking or blockage — you must drink plenty of water with guar gum to prevent severe obstruction of your esophagus or small bowel. Do not take it with inadequate fluid.
