Moderate evidence
The evidence we have suggests taurine is possibly effective for hepatitis and possibly effective for congestive heart failure (CHF), a condition where the heart can't pump blood efficiently. For obesity, the evidence leans toward possibly ineffective.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taurine is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth in typical doses for up to one year. Most common side effects are constipation, diarrhea, and indigestion.
Serious adverse effects are rare; case reports mention hypersensitivity reactions in people with histories of allergies to sulfonamides or sulfites, and rare serious cardiovascular effects in energy drink studies — though it's unclear whether taurine or other ingredients in those drinks were responsible. Long-term safety beyond one year is less certain, and there isn't enough reliable data on supplement-level doses, so use only under medical guidance.
Taurine occurs naturally in breast milk, but supplement safety during breastfeeding hasn't been well studied — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your individual situation.
