Premier HCL Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Premier HCL against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Premier HCL by Premier Research Labs
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Premier HCL is a single-ingredient product: betaine hydrochloride, a compound that provides hydrochloric acid to the stomach. The capsule itself is plant-based.
Betaine hydrochloride is marketed to support stomach acid levels, which some believe aids digestion.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence isn't established in our data for any of the conditions this product is used for — indigestion (dyspepsia), low thyroid hormone levels (hypothyroidism), diarrhea, rheumatoid arthritis, food allergies, or hay fever (allergic rhinitis). All carry a rating of insufficient reliable evidence, meaning we don't have enough solid research to say whether it works for these purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Betaine hydrochloride may irritate your stomach and is not safe if you have ulcers, gastritis, or true acid reflux — it'll only make those worse and could slow ulcer healing or cause heartburn. There isn't enough safety data to recommend it during pregnancy, so it's best avoided then.
Safety during breastfeeding hasn't been studied, so avoid use while nursing as well.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take H2-blockers, antacids, or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for acid reflux or heartburn, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before using Premier HCL. Betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acid, which could reduce how well these medications work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
Premier HCL is a single-ingredient supplement for people interested in boosting stomach acid. It's not suitable if you have ulcers, gastritis, or acid reflux, and you'll want to skip it in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
If you take any medication that reduces stomach acid — antacids, H2-blockers, or PPIs — check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, because this product could interfere with how those drugs work.

As we age, we typically produce less hydrochloric acid (HCL) which reduces our ability to efficiently absorb nutrients from food. Reduced HCL production affects the amount of protein and calcium we can absorb and can interfere with bone metabolism. Incomplete protein metabolism can imbalance intestinal flora. Taking betaine hydrochloride helps promote absorption of nutrients.

Premier HCL by Premier Research Labs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Premier HCL by Premier Research Labs contains betaine hydrochloride, which interacts with stomach-acid-reducing medications.
The concern is straightforward: betaine hydrochloride raises stomach acid, and if you're taking drugs that lower it, those drugs may not work as well. The most serious interactions are Minor in severity and affect three drug categories: H2-blockers (like famotidine and ranitidine), antacids, and proton pump inhibitors or PPIs (like omeprazole and pantoprazole).
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Betaine hydrochloride works against all three types by boosting stomach acid right when these medications are trying to reduce it. If you take any of these — whether over-the-counter antacids, prescription H2-blockers, or PPIs — the acid-lowering effect could be dampened.
Altogether, these interactions span 36 individual medications.
Before you start this product, check your exact medications with the tool on this page. If you're on any stomach-acid-reducing drug, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first.
