Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Saccharomyces boulardii, a beneficial yeast strain used to support digestive health. It also includes three inactive ingredients — hypromellose (a capsule binder), inulin (a prebiotic fiber), and guar gum (a thickener) — which are excipients that have no active role in the supplement.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: promotes intestinal tract and gut flora health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Travelers' diarrhea, Clostridioides difficile infection, Rotaviral diarrhea, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn disease — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Possibly Effective" for Helicobacter pylori, Rotaviral diarrhea, Travelers' diarrhea, Clostridioides difficile infection.
  • Also on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Constipation, Crohn disease.

The evidence for Saccharomyces boulardii is rated as possibly effective for several digestive issues: rotaviral diarrhea, travelers' diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, necrotizing enterocolitis (a serious intestinal condition in newborns), Clostridioides difficile infection (a bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhea), and Helicobacter pylori infection. 'Possibly effective' means there's some support from research, but more robust evidence would strengthen confidence. The data we hold doesn't detail how strong that evidence is for each condition.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Saccharomyces boulardii is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but it should be avoided by people who are critically ill or immunocompromised (have weak immune systems), because rare but serious yeast infections of the bloodstream (fungemia) have been reported in those populations — especially in ICU patients with central catheters, those on feeding tubes, or those on broad-spectrum antibiotics. Gastrointestinal side effects are also rare and may include abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite.

Because overall safety data is limited, speak with your doctor before starting this supplement.

Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Saccharomyces Boulardii.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 40 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take any antifungal medication (oral, topical, or for systemic fungal infections), double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this supplement, because antifungals may reduce how well the probiotic works. Additionally, if you're critically ill, immunocompromised, on broad-spectrum antibiotics, or have a central venous catheter or feeding tube, talk with your doctor before use — the risk of serious yeast infection is higher in those situations.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.

This probiotic may help with several types of diarrhea and digestive infections, but it's not for everyone. If you're critically ill or have a weakened immune system, you should avoid it.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — especially if you take antifungal medications, and especially if you have health conditions that put you at higher risk.

Formula

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that survives stomach acid and colonizes the intestinal tract. It promotes the health of the intestinal tract, helps to encourage a healthy gut flora balance, and supports a balanced intestinal response to normal internal and environmental stressors. Saccharomyces boulardii has also been shown to support proper gastrointestinal function during temporary disruptions to the normal balance of gut flora.

Saccharomyces Boulardii by NOW: Common Questions

Does Saccharomyces Boulardii by NOW interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Saccharomyces Boulardii has a known interaction with 40 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Saccharomyces Boulardii contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this kill my antifungal medication or make it less effective?
No — the interaction works the other way. The antifungal may kill off the live yeast in this supplement, making the probiotic less effective. If you take an antifungal, check with your doctor about timing or whether to use them together at all.
Can I take this if I'm on antibiotics?
That depends on the antibiotic and your overall health. Saccharomyces boulardii is sometimes used to help prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea, but people on broad-spectrum antibiotics — especially if they're critically ill — do face a higher risk of rare yeast infection. Talk with your doctor before starting it alongside antibiotics.
What are the common side effects?
Rare gastrointestinal complaints have been reported: abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, vomiting, or decreased appetite. Serious yeast infection of the blood is also rare but has occurred in critically ill or immunocompromised patients, particularly those with central catheters or on feeding tubes.
Is there safety data for pregnancy and breastfeeding?
The data we hold doesn't include safety information for pregnancy or lactation. Talk with your doctor or midwife before use if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Who shouldn't take this?
You should avoid it if you're critically ill, have a weakened immune system, have a central venous catheter, are on a feeding tube, or are on broad-spectrum antibiotics — the risk of serious yeast infection is higher in those situations. Also skip it if you're taking antifungal medication without checking first.
