TrueVision has three active ingredients: two forms of lutein (Lutein and Lutemax 2020, a branded lutein blend) and saffron (Affron Eye). Lutein is a pigment your eye naturally contains; it builds up in the retina and lens to filter harmful light.
Saffron is a spice extract that's been studied for eye and brain health. The product also contains inactive ingredients—rice flour, hypromellose, stearic acid, and silica—which are fillers and capsule materials.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, the two main eye conditions it's been studied for. The evidence isn't strong enough to call it proven, but it shows promise for both.
For other eye conditions (retinitis pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and necrotizing enterocolitis), lutein appears ineffective or has insufficient evidence. Saffron (Affron Eye) is possibly effective for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimer disease.
Like lutein, the evidence suggests benefit but isn't conclusive. We hold no effectiveness data for saffron as an eye supplement specifically.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein at typical supplement doses is generally well tolerated, with doses up to 20 mg daily showing no adverse effects in studies. However, there isn't enough data on how safe higher supplement doses are, so check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're taking more than typical amounts.
Saffron is generally well tolerated, but gastrointestinal complaints, nausea, sedation, and vomiting occur in some people. Rare serious reactions like anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) have been reported.
Saffron may also cause anxiety or restlessness in some users at higher doses. Lutein is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, though safety of higher supplement doses hasn't been well studied.
Saffron should be avoided in pregnancy—the data suggests it may stimulate the uterus. Saffron's safety in breastfeeding isn't well established, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it while nursing.

Saffron also interacts with blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs) and diabetes medications. It may lower blood pressure on its own, so combining it with blood pressure drugs could drop it too far.
With diabetes medications, saffron may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Additionally, saffron might slow how your body clears caffeine, potentially raising caffeine levels if you take a lot of it.

Affron Eye
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some clinical research shows that taking saffron extract reduces fasting levels of glucose when used in addition to hypoglycemic agents. However, saffron powder itself has not been shown to reduce fasting glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects.
Animal and human research suggests that saffron extract can decrease blood pressure.
Caffeine
Theoretically, saffron might inhibit the metabolism of caffeine.
A small clinical study suggests that taking saffron powder 300 mg in 150 mL water daily for 5 days and then taking caffeine 200 mg seems to reduce caffeine metabolite levels in the saliva and urine in males, but not females. Theoretically, this may be due to the inhibition of cytochrome P450 1A2 by saffron.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron and CNS depressants might have additive sedative effects.
Clinical research shows that taking saffron extract 60 mg orally daily for 26 weeks can cause drowsiness and sedation. Animal research suggests that adding saffron to hexobarbital further increases sleeping and slows motor activity.
