Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Hydrocodone

Acetaminophen, Hydrocodone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group 1,3-dmaa interacts with.

1,3-DMAA strongly inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzymes in vitro. Theoretically, 1,3-DMAA can increase levels of CYP2D6 substrates. Some of drugs that are CYP2D6 substrates include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the wrinkle with the hydrocodone part of your Vicodin or Norco. Hydrocodone is a prodrug, meaning your body uses the liver enzyme CYP2D6 to turn part of it into hydromorphone, a more potent painkiller. DMAA has been shown in lab (test tube) studies to block CYP2D6. In theory, blocking that conversion could mean less of the active, stronger form and weaker pain relief for some people.

Honestly though, the bigger concern isn't this enzyme detail. DMAA is a powerful, FDA-banned stimulant that raises blood pressure and heart rate, while hydrocodone slows breathing and the nervous system. Mixing a strong stimulant with an opioid is hard on your heart. Please skip DMAA entirely and check with your pharmacist or doctor.
