ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Dronabinol
Dronabinol falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with dronabinol and algin. Algin is a seaweed fiber that soaks up water and forms a thick gel in your stomach. The thinking is that this gel could grab onto a pill that's sitting in there and slightly slow or reduce how much of the drug your body soaks up. For dronabinol, that might mean a bit less of its appetite-boosting and anti-nausea effect, though honestly this is only a theoretical concern from lab work, not something proven in people.
It's rated minor, so don't lose sleep over it. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your dronabinol first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the algin. If you ever feel it's working less well, loop in your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dronabinol page
“A glass of grapefruit juice can push dronabinol (Marinol, Syndros), the prescription form of THC used for chemotherapy nausea and appetite loss, to higher blood levels than intended, amplifying dizziness, sedation, and its mind-altering effects. That is one of three major-rated interactions among the 151 supplements and herbs on file,…”

About Algin
What is Algin?
- Heartburn and acid reflux (in combination products)
- Lowering cholesterol
- Digestive health and feeling full
- Use as a thickener and binder in foods and medicines
- Weight management
Algin (alginate) is a fiber-like substance from brown seaweed that is widely used as a thickener, gel, and binder in foods and medicines. Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
About Dronabinol
What Is Dronabinol Used For?
Brand names: Marinol, Syndros
Dronabinol — available as capsules (Marinol, Dronabinol) and as an oral solution (Syndros, Dronabinol oral solution) — is approved for two conditions in adults. First, it treats anorexia (severely reduced appetite) associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. Second, it controls nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have not gotten enough relief from standard anti-nausea treatments.
Both uses apply to all available formulations, but dosing timing and meal instructions differ between the capsule and oral solution products. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you have been prescribed.
