Dronabinol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear dronabinol (Marinol, Syndros) out of your system. In lab studies, uva ursi seems to slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in people, dronabinol could hang around longer and build up, meaning a stronger than expected effect.

For dronabinol, that might show up as more drowsiness, dizziness, a faster heartbeat, feeling spacey or confused, or even anxiety. The important thing to know is that this is only a theoretical concern seen in test tubes, not something proven in actual patients, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since uva ursi can be hard on the liver and is meant for short-term use only, please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Dronabinol Used For?

Brand names: Marinol, Syndros

Dronabinol — available as capsules (Marinol, Dronabinol) and as an oral solution (Syndros, Dronabinol oral solution) — is approved for two conditions in adults. First, it treats anorexia (severely reduced appetite) associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. Second, it controls nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have not gotten enough relief from standard anti-nausea treatments.

Both uses apply to all available formulations, but dosing timing and meal instructions differ between the capsule and oral solution products. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you have been prescribed.
