Dronabinol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Bacopa interacts with.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
Research on the effect of bacopa extracts on CYP2C9 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C9, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Here's the basic idea with bacopa and dronabinol (Marinol, Syndros). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break dronabinol down. In lab studies, bacopa might slow that enzyme a bit. If it does, dronabinol could clear more slowly and build up, which may mean stronger effects like drowsiness, dizziness, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling "too high."

That said, this is very weak, theoretical evidence from test-tube studies, and the results are mixed, so we honestly don't know if it matters in real people. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since dronabinol can already make you woozy, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before adding a bacopa supplement.

Here's the gist for these two together. Your body clears dronabinol largely through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, bacopa has shown a mild ability to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, dronabinol could clear a little slower and build up, which might nudge up its effects, things like drowsiness, dizziness, a faster heartbeat, confusion, or feeling unusually "high."

The good news: this is only a theoretical concern. The evidence comes from test tubes, not people, and even those studies disagree on whether it matters. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since both can make you sleepy, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you notice more side effects.

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.

What Is Dronabinol Used For?

Brand names: Marinol, Syndros

Dronabinol — available as capsules (Marinol, Dronabinol) and as an oral solution (Syndros, Dronabinol oral solution) — is approved for two conditions in adults. First, it treats anorexia (severely reduced appetite) associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. Second, it controls nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have not gotten enough relief from standard anti-nausea treatments.

Both uses apply to all available formulations, but dosing timing and meal instructions differ between the capsule and oral solution products. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you have been prescribed.
