Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Here's the gist for your Lybrel (a birth control pill that combines ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel). In some lab tests, bacopa appears to mildly slow down an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the players that helps clear the estrogen part of your pill. In theory, if that enzyme runs slower, a bit more estrogen could hang around, which might mean more of the usual estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating.

That said, this is based only on test-tube studies, and the findings even conflict with each other, so a real-world problem is far from certain. It's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor, but there's no need to worry or change anything on your own.

Your birth control pill (Lybrel) combines ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, and your liver clears both hormones partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. The thinking here is that bacopa might slow that enzyme down a little, which in theory could let hormone levels drift up a bit. If that happened, you might notice more of the usual estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or headaches.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. The only evidence comes from lab dish studies, and even those disagree with each other, so this may not matter at all in real life. Bacopa is not a known reason for the pill to fail. Still, since this is your contraception, it is worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding bacopa.

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies.
