Zileuton falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might decrease the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to induce CYP1A2 activity. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the gist for Zileuton (Zyflo). Your body clears this asthma medicine partly through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In animal studies given high doses, atractylodes seemed to speed up that enzyme. If the same thing happened in people, it could clear zileuton a little faster and leave less in your system, which might make it work less well at keeping your airways calm.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. It has only been seen in lab and animal research, never confirmed in humans, and it's rated a minor, possible interaction. Zileuton is preventive, so weaker control could quietly mean more wheezing, coughing, or chest tightness over time. If you'd like to try atractylodes, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Zileuton also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the basic idea with Atractylodes and Zileuton. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break Zileuton down. In lab and animal studies, atractylodes seemed to slow a similar enzyme, and if that happened in people, Zileuton could clear a bit more slowly and build up. In theory, that might mean slightly stronger effects or more side effects, like upset stomach, headache, or rarely changes in liver tests (your doctor already checks those while you're on this drug).

I want to be honest, though: this is only a theoretical, low-level concern. It hasn't been shown in humans, and it's rated minor. Still, before you add an atractylodes supplement, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
