Dronedarone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP3A4 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids. In vitro research suggests that beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear dronedarone (Multaq) out of your system. The beta-carboline compounds in ayahuasca may block that enzyme, at least in lab studies. If that happens in a person, dronedarone could build up higher than expected and hit you harder.

With dronedarone specifically, more drug in the blood can mean a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, dizziness, or a longer QT interval, which affects your heart's rhythm. That's the very thing this drug is meant to control, so it matters. Honestly though, this concern comes only from test-tube research, not real people, so it's theoretical. Even so, ayahuasca carries its own serious risks. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything with Multaq.

What Is Dronedarone Used For?

Brand name: Multaq

Multaq (dronedarone) tablets are used to reduce the risk of being hospitalized for atrial fibrillation (AF) — an irregular, often rapid heart rhythm. It is approved for adults who are currently in normal sinus rhythm but have a history of paroxysmal (comes and goes) or persistent atrial fibrillation.

Multaq is not appropriate for everyone with AF. It must not be used in people with permanent atrial fibrillation or in those with recently worsened heart failure requiring hospitalization — these patients face a doubled risk of death, stroke, and hospitalization if they take it.
