Why this applies to Dexamethasone

Dexamethasone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP3A4 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids. In vitro research suggests that beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version on combining ayahuasca with dexamethasone. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break dexamethasone down. The beta-carboline compounds in ayahuasca (harmine and harmaline) appear to block that same enzyme in lab dishes. If that blocking happened in your body, dexamethasone could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which might mean stronger steroid effects like trouble sleeping, mood swings, higher blood sugar, fluid retention, or stomach upset.

That said, this is only theoretical right now, based on test-tube research, and it has not been shown in real people. Honestly, the bigger concern is that ayahuasca itself can be dangerous. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before mixing the two.

What Is Dexamethasone Used For?

Brand names: Decadron, Hexadrol, Dexone, Ozurdex, Dexycu, Hemady, Dextenza

Dexamethasone is mainly used to calm inflammation and overactive immune responses. Depending on the product, it treats allergic conditions, skin diseases, adrenal and other hormone disorders, and certain bowel diseases.

Some uses belong only to specific products. Hemady tablets are used with other anti-myeloma medicines for adults with multiple myeloma. Dextenza (an eye insert) treats eye inflammation and pain after eye surgery and eye itching from allergic conjunctivitis. Ozurdex (an eye implant) treats macular edema after retinal vein occlusion, non-infectious uveitis of the back of the eye, and diabetic macular edema. Maxidex and dexamethasone sodium phosphate eye drops treat steroid-responsive inflammation of the front of the eye.
