Clopidogrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP3A4 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids. In vitro research suggests that beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the wrinkle with clopidogrel (Plavix): it's a prodrug. That means you swallow it in an inactive form, and your body's liver enzymes (mainly CYP2C19, with some help from CYP3A4) have to switch it on before it can thin your blood and protect against clots. So anything that slows those enzymes can leave you with less active drug, not more.

The lab research on ayahuasca suggests its beta-carboline compounds could mildly block CYP3A4. In theory, that might reduce how much active clopidogrel you form, which could weaken its clot-preventing job. Honestly, though, this is only seen in test-tube studies, never in people, so the real-world risk is uncertain. Given how serious clopidogrel's purpose is, please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

What Is Clopidogrel Used For?

Brand name: Plavix

Clopidogrel tablets are used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) — including unstable angina and non-ST-elevation or ST-elevation heart attacks — and in people with a history of recent heart attack, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. For ACS, it is typically given alongside aspirin.

It works by preventing platelets (blood cells that trigger clotting) from clumping together, which helps keep arteries open and lowers the chance of a dangerous clot forming.
