Why this applies to Nifedipine

Nifedipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP3A4 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids. In vitro research suggests that beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear nifedipine from your system. The beta-carboline compounds in ayahuasca (harmine and harmaline) appear to slow that same enzyme down. If clearance slows, more nifedipine can linger in your blood, which could push its effects too far. Nifedipine isn't a prodrug, so more of it means more drug action, not less.

In real terms, that could mean lower blood pressure than intended, dizziness, flushing, headache, a fast or pounding heartbeat, or swollen ankles. I'll be honest though, this is theoretical, seen only in lab studies and never confirmed in people. Beyond that, ayahuasca carries its own serious risks, so please check with your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything.

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
