Why this applies to Granisetron

Granisetron falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase levels of serotonin, which may have additive effects with serotonergic drugs.
In vitro and animal research shows that harmaline and harmine, constituents of ayahuasca, strongly and reversibly inhibit monoamine oxidase A and weakly inhibit monoamine oxidase B. The dimethyltryptamine and tetrahydroharmine constituents of ayahuasca have also demonstrated serotonergic activity. A case of serotonin syndrome characterized by tremors, sweating, shivering, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and disorientation has been reported in a 36-year-old male who consumed 100 mL of ayahuasca while taking fluoxetine 20 mg daily. Combining serotonergic drugs with ayahuasca might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders.

Here's the connection worth knowing. Granisetron works on serotonin pathways to calm nausea and vomiting during chemo or radiation. Ayahuasca also pushes serotonin activity up, partly because the vine's compounds (harmine and harmaline) act like MAO inhibitors and slow the breakdown of serotonin. Stacking two things that raise serotonin can, in theory, tip you toward too much, a state called serotonin syndrome.

If that happened, you might notice shivering, sweating, a racing heart, tremors, agitation, confusion, or worse nausea, the very thing you're trying to control. To be clear, this caution is theoretical, based on how these substances behave, not on solid studies with granisetron. Still, please don't combine them without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.

About Granisetron

What Is Granisetron Used For?

Brand names: Kytril, Sustol

Granisetron is used to prevent nausea and vomiting linked to emetogenic (nausea-causing) cancer chemotherapy — including high-dose cisplatin — and radiation therapy, including total body irradiation and fractionated abdominal radiation. Granisetron hydrochloride tablets and Granisol oral solution are approved for both the chemotherapy and radiation indications. Sancuso skin patch is approved for prevention of nausea and vomiting in adults receiving moderately and/or highly emetogenic chemotherapy regimens of up to 5 consecutive days.

Granisetron hydrochloride injection (intravenous) is also used to prevent and treat postoperative nausea and vomiting in adults. Sustol (subcutaneous injection) is used in combination with other anti-nausea medicines in adults specifically for the prevention of acute and delayed nausea and vomiting associated with moderately emetogenic chemotherapy or anthracycline and cyclophosphamide combination chemotherapy regimens.
