Why this applies to Levobupivacaine

Levobupivacaine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP3A4 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids. In vitro research suggests that beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the simple version. Levobupivacaine (Chirocaine) is a local anesthetic, the kind of numbing medicine your provider injects during surgery or for pain control. Your liver partly clears it using an enzyme called CYP3A4. The beta-carbolines in ayahuasca may block that same enzyme, at least in lab studies. If that block happened in a real person, levobupivacaine could clear more slowly and build up in your blood.

Higher levels of this drug can mean more side effects, like dizziness, ringing in the ears, a numb or tingly mouth, or in rare cases heart rhythm or seizure problems. That said, this is theoretical and only shown in test tubes, not in humans. Since levobupivacaine is given by a clinician, just tell your anesthesia team or pharmacist about any ayahuasca use beforehand.
