Norgestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP3A4 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids. In vitro research suggests that beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for your mini-pill: norgestrel is a progestin that your body clears partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some lab studies suggest the beta-carboline compounds in ayahuasca can slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let a little more norgestrel build up in your blood, which might mean more progestin-type side effects like spotting, breast tenderness, headache, or mood changes.

I want to be honest with you: this is theoretical. It's only been seen in test-tube research, not in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Norgestrel isn't a prodrug, so its effect generally goes up, not down, here. Still, ayahuasca carries serious risks of its own, so please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Brand names: Ovrette, Orval 21

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
