Here's the simple version: the hydrocodone in your Vicodin or Norco is an opioid that already slows you down, causing drowsiness, slowed breathing, and that foggy, sedated feeling. Bay leaf contains a compound called methyl eugenol that, in animal studies, showed mild sedative effects. So the theory is that large amounts of concentrated bay leaf could add to that calming effect and leave you more sleepy or sluggish than expected.

I want to be honest with you: this is a theoretical concern, not something proven in people. The bay leaf you toss into a soup or stew is not going to do this. The worry is only with concentrated supplements or essential oils. If you're considering those while taking this medication, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist when it comes to bay leaf and your Vicodin or Norco. The concern on file is mostly theoretical, based on how bay leaf behaves in lab studies rather than in real people. The idea is that in large, concentrated amounts (think supplement capsules or essential oils, not a leaf in your soup), bay leaf might add to the calming, sedative side of narcotic pain relievers like hydrocodone.

If that did happen, you could feel extra drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or constipated, and in a worst case, slowed breathing. The amount you'd use in cooking is very unlikely to cause any trouble at all. Still, before you start a concentrated bay leaf product alongside this medication, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
