Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your Combivent inhaler combines two breathing medicines: ipratropium and albuterol. The albuterol part is a beta-agonist, and that's the piece that interacts here. The caffeine in black tea can add to the same kind of heart stimulation that albuterol already causes. On their own, both can speed up your heart a little, give you a jittery or shaky feeling, or make you notice your heartbeat more strongly.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this is mostly theoretical, based on how caffeine and beta-agonists work, not on strong studies. A normal cup or two of tea is unlikely to be a problem for most people. Stacking several strong teas or other caffeine sources on heavy inhaler days is where you might feel extra jittery or fast-hearted. If you notice that, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Black tea is a popular caffeinated drink made from the fully oxidized leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, and it contains caffeine and antioxidant plant compounds. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, sensitive to caffeine, or taking medicines, talk to your pharmacist or doctor.
