Thioridazine falls under PHENOTHIAZINES — the group Black Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, phenothiazines might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine. Also, black tea may bind to phenothiazines and reduce their absorption.
Black tea contains caffeine. Phenothiazines can reduce the metabolism of caffeine by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2). Additionally, the tannins in black tea may bind to phenothiazines in the gastrointestinal tract and reduce their absorption.

Here's the gist with black tea and thioridazine. There are really two small things going on. First, the tannins in tea can latch onto thioridazine right in your stomach and gut, which may keep some of the dose from being absorbed. If less gets in, your medicine might not control symptoms as well. Second, thioridazine can slow how your body clears caffeine, so the caffeine from tea may hang around longer and leave you feeling jittery, restless, or with a faster heartbeat or trouble sleeping.

The good news: this is rated minor and is mostly based on lab-type findings, not strong human studies. A practical habit is to space your tea a couple of hours away from your dose. Since thioridazine is a serious heart-sensitive medicine, check with your pharmacist before changing anything.

What Is Thioridazine Used For?

Brand name: Mellaril

Thioridazine Hydrochloride tablets are used for the management of schizophrenia — but only in patients who have already tried at least two other antipsychotic medications without adequate results, either because those drugs didn't work well enough or caused intolerable side effects.

Because thioridazine carries serious heart-rhythm risks, it is considered a last-resort option for schizophrenia, not a first-line treatment. It is not approved for dementia-related psychosis or any other psychiatric condition.
