Captopril, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.

Here's the simple version: that thick, jelly-like fiber in psyllium can grab onto pills sitting in your gut and slow down or slightly change how much medicine your body soaks up. With your captopril and hydrochlorothiazide combo, the worry is that taking the fiber too close to your dose might blunt how well it gets absorbed, which could mean your blood pressure isn't controlled quite as smoothly.

The good news is this is mostly theoretical and rated as a minor interaction, so it's easy to sidestep. Just separate them in time: take your blood pressure pill first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium, and drink plenty of water. If you notice your numbers creeping up, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Blond psyllium is a soluble fiber from the seed husks of Plantago ovata, and it is one of the better-studied fiber supplements. It can help with both constipation and diarrhea and may modestly lower cholesterol and blood sugar. It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but always start low and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Captopril and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Capozide, Acezide

Captopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The two ingredients work together to lower blood pressure more effectively than either one alone.

This combination may be started as initial therapy or substituted when a patient has already been adjusted on both ingredients separately. It is approved for patients with normal kidney function, and is used more cautiously in those with impaired kidney function.
