Selumetinib Sulfate falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Burdock interacts with.

Theoretically, taking burdock with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.

In vitro research shows that lignans from burdock reduce rabbit platelet aggregation by inhibiting platelet activating factor. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the honest picture with Koselugo (selumetinib) and burdock. The concern on file is about bleeding risk when burdock is combined with blood thinners. In lab dishes, burdock's lignan compounds slowed platelets from clumping together. But this has never actually been reported in people, and it comes only from test-tube and animal work, so the evidence is weak and theoretical.

That said, selumetinib itself can lower platelet counts and cause bleeding or easy bruising in some kids. So in theory, stacking burdock on top could add to that. I'd keep an eye out for things like nosebleeds, unusual bruising, or bleeding gums. Eating burdock as a vegetable is unlikely to matter much, but before giving concentrated burdock supplements, please check with your child's oncology team or pharmacist first.

What Is Selumetinib Used For?

Brand name: Koselugo

Koselugo (selumetinib) is approved for adults and children 1 year of age and older who have neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) — a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow on nerve tissue — when they also have symptomatic, inoperable plexiform neurofibromas (large, deep nerve tumors that cannot be surgically removed and are causing problems).

Both the Koselugo capsule and Koselugo oral granule formulations are approved for this use. The oral granule form is intended for patients who have difficulty swallowing whole capsules.
