Here's the simple version: Diazepam (Valium) is already a calming, sedating medication, and the dream herb may add a little sedation of its own. Stack them together and you could feel more drowsy, foggy, or unsteady than you'd expect from the Valium alone. Diazepam isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about activating or blocking it. It's just two things that quiet the brain piling on top of each other.

I want to be honest with you though: this concern is theoretical, based on how Calea behaves in animals and a few people, not on solid human studies. So it may not amount to much. Still, if you ever feel extra sleepy, confused, or weak, that's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

Calea zacatechichi, often called 'dream herb,' is a Mexican plant traditionally used to encourage vivid dreams and to treat digestive complaints and fever. Human research is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven, and its safety has not been carefully studied. It tastes very bitter, can cause nausea, and should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Diazepam

What Is Diazepam Used For?

Brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
