Here's the simple version: Zolpidem already works by calming down activity in your brain to help you fall asleep. The dream herb, Calea zacatechichi, appears to have its own mild calming (sedative) effect on the brain in both animals and people. So if you take them together, the worry is that those two effects could stack up and leave you more sedated than you bargained for.

In practical terms, that might mean feeling extra groggy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet, and possibly stronger next-morning drowsiness. I'll be honest though, this is a theoretical concern based on how each one behaves, not on solid studies of the two used together, and it's rated as minor. Still, since both touch the same sleepy pathways, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Calea zacatechichi, often called 'dream herb,' is a Mexican plant traditionally used to encourage vivid dreams and to treat digestive complaints and fever. Human research is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven, and its safety has not been carefully studied. It tastes very bitter, can cause nausea, and should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Zolpidem

What Is Zolpidem Used For?

Brand names: Ambien CR, Intermezzo, Sublinox

Zolpidem is used short-term for insomnia. Most formulations — including Ambien, oral tablets, and Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules — are approved to help people who have trouble falling asleep at bedtime. Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules are specifically indicated for adults under 65.

The extended-release formulations (including Zolpidem Tartrate Extended-Release Tablets) help with both falling asleep and staying asleep through the night. Sublingual tablets (Edluar, Zolpidem Tartrate Sublingual Tablet, and Zolpidem tartrate sublingual) are taken as needed when you wake up in the middle of the night and cannot get back to sleep — but only if at least 4 hours of sleep time remain before you need to be up.
