Clopidogrel falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that extracts of cilantro can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, cilantro might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the simple version: clopidogrel (Plavix) already works to keep your platelets from clumping together, which is how it lowers your risk of clots after a stent, heart attack, or stroke. Lab studies hint that cilantro extracts may also slightly nudge platelets in that same direction. Stack the two and, in theory, you could be a touch more prone to bleeding or bruising.

But the honesty matters here: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube research, not on real patients. The amount of cilantro you'd eat in salsa, pho, or guacamole is very unlikely to cause any problem. I'd only pause over concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil. If you notice easy bruising, nosebleeds, or blood in your stool, call your doctor, and check before starting any cilantro product.

What Is Clopidogrel Used For?

Clopidogrel tablets are used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) — including unstable angina and non-ST-elevation or ST-elevation heart attacks — and in people with a history of recent heart attack, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. For ACS, it is typically given alongside aspirin.

It works by preventing platelets (blood cells that trigger clotting) from clumping together, which helps keep arteries open and lowers the chance of a dangerous clot forming.
