Vinblastine falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the gist for this pairing. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin, and in test-tube studies only it seemed to make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Vinblastine, your chemo drug, can also make your skin react more easily to the sun. So the theory is that piling the two together could leave you a bit more prone to sunburn, redness, or rashes after time outdoors.

I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not real patient cases. Normal food amounts of cilantro in your cooking are very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil are a different story, so check with your oncology team before using those. While on vinblastine, it's smart to use sunscreen and cover up regardless.

What Is Vinblastine Used For?

Brand name: Velban

Vinblastine Sulfate Injection is used in the treatment of a range of cancers. Conditions that tend to respond well include generalized Hodgkin's disease, lymphocytic lymphoma, histiocytic lymphoma, advanced mycosis fungoides (a type of skin lymphoma), advanced testicular cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma, and Letterer-Siwe disease (a rare immune condition also called histiocytosis X).

It may also be used for cancers that respond less reliably, such as choriocarcinoma resistant to other chemotherapy drugs, and breast cancer that has not responded to hormonal therapy. Vinblastine is often given as part of a combination chemotherapy regimen alongside other cancer medicines to improve response rates.
