Tigecycline falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the connection worth knowing. Tigecycline is in the tetracycline family, and these antibiotics can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you may sunburn faster than usual. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, at least in lab studies, may also nudge skin toward being more sun-sensitive. Put the two together and the worry is a little extra risk of sunburn or a sun rash.

That said, this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real patient cases, and everyday cilantro in your food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cilantro extracts or essential oils are a bigger question mark. Since tigecycline is given in a hospital setting, just use sunscreen and cover up outdoors, and check with your care team if you have questions.

About Tigecycline Injection

What Is Tigecycline Injection Used For?

Brand name: Tygacil

Tygacil (tigecycline for injection) is approved for adults 18 and older to treat three types of serious bacterial infections: complicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal (stomach and intestinal) infections, and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (pneumonia caught outside a hospital).

It is not approved for diabetic foot infections or for pneumonia caught in a hospital setting, including ventilator-associated pneumonia — clinical trials showed it did not work well enough for those uses and was associated with higher mortality in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia.
