In vitro research suggests that extracts of cilantro can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, cilantro might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the simple version: dabigatran (Pradaxa) is already a blood thinner, and lab studies hint that cilantro may slightly slow down how your platelets clump together. Stacking those two could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk a little higher. That might look like easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that take longer to stop.

Now, the reassuring part: this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube work, not real patient cases. The cilantro you sprinkle on tacos or salsa is very unlikely to cause any problem. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oils are a different story, so run those by your pharmacist or doctor first. And as always, never change your Pradaxa on your own.

About Dabigatran

What Is Dabigatran Used For?

Brand names: Pradaxa, Pradax

Dabigatran etexilate capsules are used in adults to reduce the risk of stroke and dangerous blood clots in people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm not caused by a heart valve problem). They are also used to treat deep venous thrombosis (DVT — a blood clot in a deep vein) and pulmonary embolism (PE — a blood clot in the lungs), to lower the risk of those clots coming back, and to prevent DVT and PE in adults who have had hip replacement surgery.

In children ages 8 to under 18, dabigatran etexilate capsules are used to treat venous thromboembolic events (VTE — blood clots in the veins) and to reduce the risk of those clots recurring. Pradaxa Oral Pellets — a separate formulation — are indicated for the treatment and prevention of recurrent VTE in younger children ages 3 months to under 12 years.
