Dexchlorpheniramine falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the gist: cilantro contains a plant compound called coriandrin, which in lab dishes seems to make skin a little more sensitive to sunlight. Dexchlorpheniramine (Polaramine) can also, in some folks, make the skin more prone to sunburn. So in theory, pairing the two could add up and leave you burning a bit faster than usual when you're out in the sun.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's based only on lab research, not real patient cases, and the cilantro you sprinkle on tacos or in salsa is very unlikely to cause any trouble at all. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil are where you'd want to be more thoughtful. If you're using those and spending real time outdoors, wear sunscreen and check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Chlorpheniramine is used to temporarily relieve common allergy symptoms caused by hay fever (allergic rhinitis) or other upper respiratory allergies. These include runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

These uses are supported across multiple products — including tablets (such as Aller-chlor, Allergy, Allergy Relief, Allergy Time, Anti Allergy, and Chlorpheniramine Maleate), extended-release tablets (Allergy Relief and Chlorphen-12), the oral solution Ed Chlorped Jr, and the inhalers ClorRelief and ClorRelief KIDs.
