Quetiapine falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the deal with cilantro and your quetiapine (Seroquel). This isn't about cilantro changing how your body breaks down the medicine, so it won't make your quetiapine stronger or weaker. The concern is about sun sensitivity. A plant compound in cilantro called coriandrin may make skin a little more reactive to sunlight, and quetiapine itself can occasionally do the same. Put together, you could theoretically sunburn more easily.

I want to be honest though: this is based only on lab research, not real patients, so it's a weak and theoretical connection. Eating cilantro in your food is very unlikely to cause any trouble. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oils are a different story. If you're using those, just wear sunscreen and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Quetiapine

What Is Quetiapine Used For?

Brand names: Seroquel, Dopaquel

Quetiapine treats schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and certain age groups of children and adolescents. For bipolar disorder, it is approved for manic episodes (both as a stand-alone treatment and alongside lithium or divalproex) and for depressive episodes.

The extended-release form of quetiapine is also approved as add-on therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who are already taking an antidepressant. The regular tablet form is not approved for this use.
