Elotuzumab falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Comfrey interacts with.

Theoretically, comfrey might have additive adverse effects on the liver when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
Due to its pyrrolizidine alkaloid constituents, comfrey can cause hepatotoxic effects, including ascites, cirrhosis, hepatic fibrosis, hepatomegaly, and sinusoidal obstruction syndrome.

Here's the concern with combining comfrey and Empliciti (elotuzumab). Comfrey naturally contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can be hard on the liver, especially when it's swallowed rather than dabbed on the skin. Your myeloma treatment already includes other drugs that the liver has to process, and your care team watches your liver function closely. Adding something else that may stress the liver could, in theory, make liver problems more likely.

I'll be honest: this is a theoretical caution based on how comfrey behaves, not on cases involving elotuzumab itself. Still, comfrey should never be taken by mouth. Please run any comfrey product, even a cream, past your oncologist or pharmacist before using it during treatment.

Comfrey is a traditional herb used mainly on the skin for bruises, sprains, and joint pain, and some topical products show modest benefit for these uses. However, comfrey contains compounds that can seriously damage the liver, so it should never be taken by mouth and should only be used on unbroken skin for short periods. Pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it entirely.

About Elotuzumab Injection

What Is Elotuzumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Empliciti

Empliciti is used to treat multiple myeloma (a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow) in adults who have already tried other treatments. It is always given as part of a combination regimen — never alone.

Empliciti combined with lenalidomide and dexamethasone is used in adults who have received one to three prior therapies. Empliciti combined with pomalidomide and dexamethasone is used in adults who have received at least two prior therapies, including lenalidomide and a proteasome inhibitor.
