Corn Silk and Warfarin Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

WARFARIN (Coumadin)

Theoretically, suddenly stopping, starting, or changing corn silk treatment may alter the effects of warfarin.
Corn silk contains vitamin K. Individuals taking warfarin should consume a consistent daily amount of corn silk to maintain consistent anticoagulation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Likely Evidence D

Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about warfarin: it works by blocking vitamin K, which your body needs to form clots. So anything that adds vitamin K to your diet can push back against warfarin and make it work a little less. Corn silk contains some vitamin K, so in theory it could nudge your blood thinner's effect down if you take a lot of it.

Honestly, this is more about consistency than danger. The real worry is sudden change. If you start or stop corn silk out of the blue, your INR could drift, meaning your blood could get too thin (bruising, bleeding gums, nosebleeds) or not thin enough (clot risk). This is a theoretical concern based on the vitamin K content, not strong studies. Since warfarin is finicky, just keep your intake steady and tell your pharmacist or doctor before adding or quitting it so they can watch your INR.

About Corn Silk

What is Corn Silk?

Corn Silk
  • Urinary tract and bladder problems
  • Mild fluid retention (diuretic)
  • Kidney and prostate concerns
  • Bedwetting in children
  • Soothing urinary irritation

Corn silk is a traditional herbal remedy taken as a tea or extract, mostly for urinary and mild fluid-related complaints. High-quality human evidence for these uses is limited, so it should not replace proven treatments. It is generally considered low-risk for short-term use in healthy adults, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it.

About Warfarin

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
