Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a twist worth knowing: glucagon does the opposite of most diabetes drugs. While your everyday diabetes medicines work to lower blood sugar, glucagon is your emergency rescue tool that raises blood sugar fast by telling your liver to dump out its stored sugar. You'd reach for it during a serious low.

Corn silk, on the other hand, is thought to gently nudge blood sugar down, though this comes only from animal studies and is theoretical, so don't lose sleep over it. The bigger picture is that corn silk could blunt how well glucagon pulls you out of a low. Keep using your glucagon exactly as prescribed in an emergency, and just mention the corn silk tea to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your sugars.

About Corn Silk

What is Corn Silk?

Corn Silk
  • Urinary tract and bladder problems
  • Mild fluid retention (diuretic)
  • Kidney and prostate concerns
  • Bedwetting in children
  • Soothing urinary irritation

Corn silk is a traditional herbal remedy taken as a tea or extract, mostly for urinary and mild fluid-related complaints. High-quality human evidence for these uses is limited, so it should not replace proven treatments. It is generally considered low-risk for short-term use in healthy adults, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it.
