Why this applies to Alfuzosin

Alfuzosin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Cubebs interacts with.

Several compounds isolated from cubebs can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this effect has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, cubebs might increase the effects and side effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. These include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for alfuzosin (Uroxatral): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medication down. In lab tests (not in people yet), certain compounds in cubeb berries have slowed that same enzyme. If that were to happen in your body, alfuzosin could clear out more slowly and build up a bit higher than expected.

What might that feel like? Alfuzosin already tends to lower blood pressure, so more of it on board could mean dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint, especially when you stand up quickly. The good news: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, and a sprinkle of cubeb as a spice is unlikely to matter. Concentrated cubeb oils or extracts are a different story, so check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Alfuzosin is used to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can make urination difficult. It helps relax the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck so urine can flow more easily.

It is not approved to treat high blood pressure, and it is not for use in children or women.
