Why this applies to Alprazolam

Alprazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Cubebs interacts with.

Several compounds isolated from cubebs can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this effect has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, cubebs might increase the effects and side effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. These include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Your body clears alprazolam (Xanax) using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab studies, certain compounds in cubebs can slow that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in real life, your alprazolam could hang around longer and build up a bit, meaning stronger and longer effects. With Xanax, that could show up as extra drowsiness, dizziness, foggy thinking, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

Here is the reassuring part: this is only seen in test-tube research, not in people, so it is theoretical. A sprinkle of cubeb as a spice is unlikely to matter much. Concentrated cubeb oils or extracts are the bigger question mark, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
