Cucumber and Liraglutide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Liraglutide

Liraglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Cucumber interacts with.

Theoretically, cucumber seed might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research shows that cucumber seed extract can decrease blood glucose levels. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: eating cucumber as a food is not going to cause trouble with your Victoza (liraglutide). The concern on file comes from animal studies using concentrated cucumber seed extract, which seemed to lower blood sugar on its own. If that same blood-sugar-lowering effect happened in people, it could stack on top of what liraglutide already does and nudge your sugar too low.

Realistically, this is theoretical and based only on animal research, so I wouldn't lose sleep over a cucumber salad. The bigger picture is just to know the signs of low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion). If you're thinking about a concentrated cucumber seed supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your glucose readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Liraglutide page

“If you take liraglutide (Victoza), the ingredient to know first is Siberian cocklebur, the only major-rated interaction of the 239 on this page. Its seeds have caused severe hypoglycemia in people, dangerously low blood sugar, and liraglutide already pushes glucose down.”
