Cucumber and Insulin Glulisine (rDNA)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin Glulisine (rDNA)

Insulin Glulisine (rDNA) falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Cucumber interacts with.

Theoretically, cucumber seed might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research shows that cucumber seed extract can decrease blood glucose levels. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: Apidra (insulin glulisine) already lowers your blood sugar, and there's a theory that concentrated cucumber seed extract might nudge it down a little further. If both push in the same direction, you could land in low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) more easily, with signs like shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling lightheaded.

Now the honest part: this idea comes only from animal studies using cucumber seed extract, not from people, and not from eating cucumber slices at lunch. Normal food amounts of cucumber are very unlikely to matter. If you take a concentrated cucumber supplement, just keep checking your glucose as usual and let your pharmacist or doctor know so they can help you watch for any dips.
