Cucumber and Ertugliflozin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Ertugliflozin

Ertugliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Cucumber interacts with.

Theoretically, cucumber seed might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research shows that cucumber seed extract can decrease blood glucose levels. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: Ertugliflozin (Steglatro) already lowers your blood sugar by flushing extra glucose out through your urine. The concern on file is that concentrated cucumber seed extract might nudge blood sugar down a little more, so stacking the two could, in theory, push your numbers too low.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. This comes only from animal studies, not people, so it's more of a theoretical caution than something we see happen often. Eating cucumber in a salad is not going to be a problem. If you take a concentrated cucumber supplement, just keep an eye out for signs of low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, dizziness) and check your levels. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding any supplement.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ertugliflozin page

“Ertugliflozin (Steglatro) works by making your kidneys flush out extra sugar, and nearly all 256 supplements on this page pull on that same lever, so this is a list to approach carefully rather than casually. Most entries either add to the glucose-lowering effect and raise the risk of a low, or, like niacin, push blood sugar the other…”
