Valproic Acid falls under ANTICONVULSANTS — the group Dendrobium interacts with.

The dendrobium constituent dendrobine is reported to have convulsant effects. Theoretically, combining dendrobium with anticonvulsant drugs might decrease drug effectiveness and increase the risk of seizure. Some anticonvulsant drugs include phenobarbital, primidone (Mysoline), valproic acid (Depakene), gabapentin (Neurontin), carbamazepine (Tegretol), phenytoin (Dilantin), and others.

Here's the concern with pairing Dendrobium and your valproic acid. One of the natural compounds in Dendrobium, called dendrobine, has been reported to potentially trigger convulsions. Since valproic acid is working hard to keep seizures (or mood swings, or migraines) in check, adding something that may push in the opposite direction could, in theory, make your medication less effective and raise the chance of a breakthrough seizure.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. This warning is theoretical, based on how dendrobine behaves in the lab and in animals, not on real cases in people taking valproic acid. So please don't panic. But because seizure control is something you really don't want to gamble with, I'd skip concentrated Dendrobium supplements and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Valproic acid capsules (brands Valproic and Valproic Acid) and valproic acid oral solution (brand Valproic Acid) are both used to treat epilepsy. Specifically, they are approved for complex partial seizures (either alone or with other seizure types) as monotherapy or add-on therapy, and for simple and complex absence seizures as sole therapy or add-on therapy.

Both forms are intended for adults and pediatric patients. Always follow your prescriber's guidance on which product and regimen is right for you.
