Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Phenylephrine
Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Phenylephrine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Dhea interacts with.
Some preliminary evidence shows that DHEA may inhibit CYP3A4; however, the clinical significance of this potential interaction is not known.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
This combination cold-and-pain product contains hydrocodone, the ingredient I'd watch most closely here. Hydrocodone is partly processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and there is some early, anecdotal evidence that DHEA might slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let hydrocodone build up a bit, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing. The other pieces (acetaminophen, caffeine, chlorpheniramine, phenylephrine) lean less on this pathway.
I want to be honest: this is a theoretical concern that hasn't been proven to matter in real people, so I wouldn't panic. Still, since hydrocodone is an opioid, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and watch for extra sleepiness.
