Atazanavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Dhea interacts with.

Theoretically, DHEA might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some preliminary evidence shows that DHEA may inhibit CYP3A4; however, the clinical significance of this potential interaction is not known.

Here's the gist with Reyataz (atazanavir) and DHEA. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process atazanavir. Early lab hints suggest DHEA might slow that enzyme down a little. If that happened, atazanavir could build up slightly in your blood, which in theory could mean more of its usual side effects, things like nausea, headache, or that harmless yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) that atazanavir is known for.

I want to be straight with you though: this is theoretical, based on weak, anecdotal evidence, and we don't really know if it matters in real life. With HIV medicines, I'd rather you not guess. Please check with your pharmacist or HIV provider before adding DHEA, so they can keep your treatment working safely.

About Atazanavir

What Is Atazanavir Used For?

Brand name: Reyataz

Atazanavir capsules are used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in children 6 years and older who weigh at least 15 kg (about 33 lbs).

Reyataz — available as capsules and as an oral powder — is also approved for HIV-1 treatment in adults and in children as young as 3 months who weigh at least 5 kg (about 11 lbs). Reyataz oral powder must always be taken with ritonavir and food, and is not for use in children weighing less than 5 kg.
