Here's the gist with Nardil (phenelzine) and DHEA. Phenelzine is an MAOI, which means it raises levels of mood-related brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. DHEA is a hormone your body turns into testosterone and estrogen, and shifting those hormones can nudge mood too. Put them together and there's a theoretical chance of overstimulation, things like feeling unusually wired, racing thoughts, trouble sleeping, irritability, or in rare cases a manic-type episode.

I want to be honest: this concern comes mostly from lab data and a single case report involving a different antidepressant, so the evidence is weak. Still, with a medication as sensitive as phenelzine, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before adding DHEA. Don't start or stop anything on your own.

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
