About Desflurane

What Is Desflurane Used For?

Brand name: Suprane

Desflurane (available as Desflurane USP and Suprane) is a general anesthetic given by inhalation during surgery. In adults, it is approved both to start (induce) anesthesia and to keep it going (maintain) throughout inpatient and outpatient procedures.

In infants and children, desflurane is approved only for maintaining anesthesia — and only after anesthesia has first been started with a different agent and the child has been intubated (a breathing tube placed). It is not approved to start anesthesia in children, and it must not be used to maintain anesthesia in children who are not intubated.
