Efavirenz falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Dusty Miller interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inducers might increase the risk of adverse effects from the pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) constituents in dusty miller.
Dusty miller contains PAs. PAs are substrates of CYP3A4. Theoretically, drugs that induce CYP3A4 might increase the conversion of PAs to toxic metabolites.

Here's the thing to understand about this pairing. Efavirenz revs up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and that same enzyme is what turns the pyrrolizidine alkaloids in Dusty Miller into harmful, liver-damaging byproducts. So in theory, taking efavirenz could speed up the creation of those toxic metabolites and raise the risk of liver injury from the plant. The concern flows toward Dusty Miller's toxicity here, not toward changing how well your HIV medicine works.

I'll be straight with you though: this is a theoretical worry based on lab data, not real patient studies. The bigger issue is that Dusty Miller isn't considered safe to use at all. Please don't take any product made from it without first checking with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Efavirenz Used For?

Brand name: Sustiva

Efavirenz is used to treat HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus type 1) infection. It is always used together with other antiretroviral medicines — never on its own.

It is approved for adults and for children who are at least 3 months old and weigh at least 3.5 kg (about 7.7 lbs). Both the capsule and tablet forms are approved for this use.
