Flaxseed and Ammonium Chloride

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Ammonium Chloride

Ammonium Chloride falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.

Theoretically, flaxseed might have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical research shows that daily flaxseed consumption, especially for longer than 12 weeks, modestly reduces blood pressure.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture: the interaction on file is built around blood pressure medications, and it's listed as theoretical. Flaxseed taken daily, usually for more than 12 weeks, may nudge blood pressure down a little. So the worry is that flaxseed plus a blood pressure lowering drug could add up and leave you feeling lightheaded or dizzy.

But Ammonium Chloride doesn't really fit that bucket. It's mainly used as an acidifying agent (to lower urine or blood pH) and sometimes as an expectorant, not to lower blood pressure. So a meaningful interaction here is unlikely. Food amounts of flaxseed especially shouldn't be a concern. Still, if you're using concentrated flaxseed supplements, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ammonium Chloride page

“Ammonium chloride, an old drug still used to acidify the urine and correct certain acid-base imbalances, sits in caution territory in my read of this page. Most of the interactions on file involve supplements that push blood pressure up or down or that compound the fluid and potassium shifts tied to its use, and a smaller set can chang…”

Flaxseed is a nutritious food rich in fiber, omega-3 fats (ALA), and plant compounds called lignans.
