Flaxseed and Ampicillin, Sulbactam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Ampicillin, Sulbactam

Ampicillin, Sulbactam falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotics might interfere with the metabolism of flaxseed constituents, which could potentially alter the effects of flaxseed.
Some potential benefits of flaxseed are thought to be due to its lignan content. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), a major lignan precursor, is found in high concentrations in flaxseed. SDG is converted by bacteria in the colon to the lignans enterolactone and enterodiol. Antibiotics alter the flora of the colon, which could theoretically alter the metabolism of flaxseed.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's something interesting about this pairing. Unasyn (ampicillin/sulbactam) doesn't get changed by flaxseed, and flaxseed won't make the antibiotic stronger or weaker. The effect actually runs the other direction, and it's theoretical, meaning it's based on how things work in the lab, not on real problems people have reported.

Flaxseed's plant compounds (lignans) only become active after the friendly bacteria in your gut process them. Since antibiotics like Unasyn temporarily change those gut bacteria, you might get a little less of flaxseed's potential benefit while you're on the course. Your infection treatment itself is unaffected. This is nothing to worry about, but if you take flaxseed as a concentrated supplement for a specific reason, just mention it to your pharmacist.

Flaxseed is a nutritious food rich in fiber, omega-3 fats (ALA), and plant compounds called lignans.
