ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide, Methyldopa
Hydrochlorothiazide, Methyldopa falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Flaxseed interacts with.
Clinical research shows that daily flaxseed consumption, especially for longer than 12 weeks, modestly reduces blood pressure.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your combination pill pairs hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill) with methyldopa, and both already work to bring your blood pressure down. Here's the gist: eating flaxseed regularly, especially daily for more than about 12 weeks, may nudge your blood pressure a little lower on its own. Stacked on top of your medication, that mild extra effect could occasionally add up.
This is a theoretical concern based on how things work, not a strong warning, so don't panic. Just watch for signs your pressure has dipped too far, like dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, or feeling unusually tired. Occasional flaxseed on your oatmeal is unlikely to matter. If you want to take concentrated daily supplements, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
