Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Janumet pairs two diabetes medicines (metformin and sitagliptin) that work to lower your blood sugar. The thing to know here is that flaxseed may gently nudge blood sugar down on its own. So when you add a flaxseed supplement on top of Janumet, the two can stack, and your numbers might dip lower than you expect.

If that happens, watch for the usual signs of low blood sugar: shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, dizziness, or feeling confused. The good news is that this is rated moderate and the evidence is fairly modest, with food amounts of flaxseed far less likely to matter than concentrated supplement doses. Don't change anything on your own. Just check your readings and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can guide you.

  • Constipation and digestive health
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart health
  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Blood sugar support

Flaxseed is a nutritious food rich in fiber, omega-3 fats (ALA), and plant compounds called lignans. It is generally safe as a food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
