Captopril, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Gamboge interacts with.

Overuse of gamboge might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking gamboge along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia. Initiation of potassium supplementation or an increase in potassium supplement dose may be necessary for some patients.

Here's the concern with these two together. Your medication contains hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill that already pushes potassium out of your body through the urine. Gamboge is a harsh laxative that irritates the gut and causes watery stools, and that fluid loss can flush out potassium too. Stack the two and you could end up with low potassium (hypokalemia), which may show up as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat.

I'll be honest: this warning is mostly theoretical, based on how these things work rather than strong studies. But the bigger issue is that gamboge is genuinely toxic by mouth, so I'd steer clear of it regardless. If you ever feel weak or crampy on your blood pressure medicine, check in with your pharmacist or doctor about your potassium.

What is Gamboge?

Gamboge is a bright yellow tree resin used historically as a strong laxative and as an artists' pigment, but it is toxic in even modest amounts and is not a safe dietary supplement. Modern interest centers on its compound gambogic acid in laboratory cancer research, which does not make the raw resin safe to take. We recommend avoiding oral use of gamboge.

What Is Captopril and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Capozide, Acezide

Captopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The two ingredients work together to lower blood pressure more effectively than either one alone.

This combination may be started as initial therapy or substituted when a patient has already been adjusted on both ingredients separately. It is approved for patients with normal kidney function, and is used more cautiously in those with impaired kidney function.
